Bed bugs have been making the news lately. A movie theater in Times Square was recently closed down to treat an infestation. An apartment building in Fort Worth, Texas was forced to close down after a year-long battle. Bed bug calls to exterminators in Seattle have increased 70 percent in the past two years. For the elderly, bed bugs can be more prevalent: the Department of Entomology at the University of Kentucky found that 18% of all bedbug infestations occur in nursing homes. The bugs are attracted by the heat and chemicals humans produce. Residents of nursing homes stay in bed for long periods of time and live in close proximity to each other, thereby raising the risk of a bed bug infestation.
