Easy, inexpensive ways to stay at home as you get older (ways to age-in-place)…

January 31st, 2012 No Comments

Nursing homes and assisted living facilities aren’t the only destinations for people as they age. Studies have shown that most elders want to stay at home where they are most comfortable. Visiting Angels NJ Senior Care is committed to helping older adults remain at home.

Easy, affordable things seniors can do to age-in-place:

  • Look into community services such as Meals on Wheels. For a low or no-cost, meals can be delivered each day (check our list of local NJ Senior Care Resources in Burlington and Mercer Counties, NJ)
  • Modify your home by:
    • Removing throw rugs to prevent falls
    • Increase lighting in the home, as visibility decreases with age
    • Replace glass doors on the shower or tub with a shower curtain
    • Install assist-rails on the toilet

How can you care for your loved one when you’re so far away?

January 26th, 2012 No Comments

In the U.S. today, people tend to live apart from each other. At some point in their lives, your parents, grandparents or another loved one may need someone to take extra care of them. The National Institute on Aging estimates there are approximately 7 million people who are caring for their loved ones over a long distance.

How do you determine if they need some in-home care assistance? Ask these questions:

  • Does mom need help with walking?
  • Has dad’s physical and/or emotional health been in decline?
  • Can grandma prepare a nutritious meal for herself?
  • Are mom & dad able to manage bills and other finances?
  • Has grandpa been taking his medications on time?
  • Is mom able to drive safely?
  • Does grandma need companionship?
  • Can dad dress and groom himself?

Planning and preparation is key. It’s important to have a family discussion about their care (just be sure your loved one is included in the discussion!). Also, prepare necessary legal and medical documents should there be an emergency. List their medical professionals, hospitals, pharmacies, and any medications they may take. Studies show that as people age, we do better when we remain in our own home. A home care agency, such as Visiting Angels NJ Senior Care, can provide peace of mind to both the care recipient as well as the far-away family member.

Seniors, are you eating right? Check out 6 ways to eat smart…

January 17th, 2012 No Comments

The American Dietetic Association has estimated 20-60 percent of seniors at home aren’t eating right and run the risk of malnutrition.

Six ways older adults can improve their senior nutrition:

  • 1. Take a daily multi-vitamin especially formulated for seniors
  • 2. Eat more fruits and vegetables–canned or fresh
  • 3. Select low-fat or fat-free dairy products–such as milk, yogurt, and cheese
  • 4. Eat less meat/eat more beans, fish, nuts, and seeds–the last three are rich in healthy oils
  • 5. Consume less saturated fats and trans-fats
  • 6. Get your Vitamin D–through exposure to sunlight or through a vitamin

We received another excellent Senior Home Care review! Check it out…

January 12th, 2012 No Comments

“While [my grandmother's] quality of life is certainly improved, ours is as well.”

We received another fantastic senior care testimonial from Paul R. of Weehawken, NJ. He writes, “Incredibly kind and professional! We have had an ‘Angel’ taking care of my grandmother for over a year now. Although she is in excellent mental condition, my grandmother needs some extra help and can’t be left alone for long periods of time. Visiting Angels provides an incredible peace of mind for all of us in the family. Of course we all still visit her frequently, but we simply would not be able to work, travel, or sleep soundly if this angel was not with her every day. While her quality of life is certainly improved, ours is as well.”

Seniors, need some extra help? Let us be your “personal assistant”!

January 11th, 2012 No Comments

Visiting Angels NJ, senior home care professionals, provides the older population assistance with Activities of Daily Living–assisting with personal hygiene and grooming, helping with dressing/undressing, feeding, transferring, toileting, and helping them walk without a cane or walker. Many of the seniors who need these home care NJ services cannot function by themselves.

Did you realize, however, that in-home care doesn’t just help elders who are ill or otherwise unable to help themselves? We also consider our aides “personal assistants” to the aging population.

Improving the quality of life for seniors is what we’re all about. Whether it’s changing a light bulb, vacuuming the floor, dusting those nick-knacks, preparing meals, taking out the garbage, changing the bed linens, running errands, or walking the dog–we’re here to help. Contact us today!

What age do you consider to be “old”?

January 6th, 2012 No Comments

A new telephone survey commissioned by a senior home care company asked people at what age they considered a person to be “old.” The results varied according to the age of the person questioned:

  • Millennials (those born in the 1980s and 1990s) say 62
  • Generation X (those born between 1964 and 1970) think 71 years
  • Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) believe 77 is the beginning of old age
  • The Greatest Generation (those who lived through the Great Depression and WWII): 81 hits the old age mark

Regardless of which “old” you are–Visiting Angels NJ can be there for you with excellent Home Care NJ when needed!
