Getting older is difficult, especially if you’re the primary NJ elder care caregiver to an aging spouse, for example. Depression can be a symptom of caregiver stress. How can you identify if your senior loved one is depressed?
They may have depression when they experience:
- Loss of family and friends
- Insecurity about finances
- Loss of their independence
- Loss of physical functions
- Unable to enjoy or continue activities they have once enjoyed
- Metabolic instability
Other signs to notice:
- Are there days they do not get dressed and/or get out of the house?
- Do they feel “sick” all the time?
- Do they spend hours or days without social contact?
- Do they seem angry most of the time or have a short temper?
Ways to combat depression:
- Stay active and socially involved
- Take vitamins and eat nutritionally balanced meals
- Get plenty of sleep
