Ladies, are you taking care of yourselves? 9/26 is National Women’s Health & Fitness Day…

September 26th, 2012 1 Comment

Ladies, are you taking care of yourselves? Today is National Women’s Health and Fitness Day–perfect timing for Healthy Aging Month. Older women can experience more health-related issues than younger women. Osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes, and breast cancer tend to afflict more women over 50 than those under 50. By exercising as you age, you can help to maintain and improve your overall health.

How can you help your body stay healthy?

  • Try weight training. This will increase your strength in muscles, tendons and ligaments. It will also help increase bone density. Your balance will improve, which means less chance of falling. Strength training (lifting weights or exercising with resistance) can help decrease arthritis pain.
  • Try running or swimming to increase your heart rate. This may reduce hardening of the arteries, helping to ward off stroke and heart disease.
  • Whatever you do, stay active! Read more elder care New Jersey ideas about keeping active through everyday activities.

Go ahead and have that 2nd cup of coffee–it may prevent Alzheimer’s Disease…

September 25th, 2012 No Comments

A study led by Chuanhai Cao, PhD (University of South Florida College of Pharmacy), has suggested that adults over the age of 65 who drank 3-4 cups of caffeinated coffee per day were more likely to delay or prevent the development of Alzheimer’s disease. This is great news for those of us who can’t go without our frequent cups of Joe! For those in elder care NJ, always check with your care recipient’s physician before brewing up a fresh pot for them to drink.

September is World Alzheimer’s Month. 3 ways to raise awareness…

September 12th, 2012 No Comments

In the world today, there are 35 million people and their families affected by dementia. In September, let’s help raise awareness for Alzheimer’s Disease. In New Jersey elder care, there are approximately 150,000 people over 65 who are affected with Alzheimer’s. Below are three ways you can help raise awareness.

  • 1. On September 21st (Alzheimer’s Action Day), wear purple. Change your profile photo in your social media accounts to the “End Alz” icon from the Alzheimer’s Awareness website.
  • 2. Be inspired by reading stories of those with Alzheimer’s and their families/caregivers.
  • 3. Spread awareness by telling your story or of those of a loved one.

A Beautiful Thank You Surprise

Co-Owner and Managing Director Nora de Cárdenas received a wonderful surprise this week from the daughter of one of our NJ elder care clients. The note that came with the flowers was filled with thanks for Nora’s “patience, support, and friendship.” The flowers are gorgeous (and the box of chocolates were scrumptious), but the best thanks is knowing that Visiting Angels is making a real difference in the lives of both our clients and their families!
