Your Flexible Spending Account funds for 2012 expire the end of the year. If you haven’t spent down the account, have you thought of using the remaining funds to provide non-medical in-home care for your older parents this holiday season?
Don’t lose the money you’ve put into your Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs). Each year, many people forfeit unused funds that could instead provide much needed help to your older parents.
Visiting Angels NJ encourages you check if you can use these funds to provide home care for your parents. Most FSAs do allow people to use the funds for caregiving expenses. This also includes doctor co-payments, canes, walkers, and other medical equipment. Check with your employers’ Human Resource department or plan administrator for specifics on allocating funds to provide home care.
We can all use an extra helping hand around the holidays! Give us a call at 609-883-8188 if you’d like to discuss non-medical home care for your parents or older loved ones.
With the baby boomer demographic becoming older, we knew it wouldn’t take long for all types of mainstream products to be specifically aimed at the growing aging population. Proctor and Gamble has developed a line of hair products for women designed to counteract 7 signs of aging hair. A study showed those signs are thinning, dull color, breakage, split ends, being dry, frizz, and out-of-control grays. For those of us in elder care New Jersey, we’re looking forward to more and more products directed toward the older market.

This month is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Most everyone knows a loved one of someone who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease or some other form of dementia. Our hearts go out to them because it’s a progressive, unpredictable disease. Each individual is different.
One of our specialties at Visiting Angels NJ is to care for the personal and in-home care needs of our beloved Alzheimer’s members within our Visiting Angels extended family. We share this information with you in the hopes of helping families understand the nature of Alzheimer’s and what can be expected in certain cases. Some of this information is difficult and painful, but knowledge is a powerful tool.
Visiting Angels NJ salutes all Veterans on Veterans Day and every day!
Check out our special Veterans Program.
With the time change yesterday, we all got an extra hour of restful sleep. But as elder care New Jersey family caregivers of their senior loved ones know–especially loved ones who have dementia, the time change may have affected sleep patterns.
For example, because it’s dark earlier, those who experience sundown syndrome may experience more confusion and agitation for a time. As a family caregiver, you can try to expose your loved one to as much daylight as possible and keep naps to a minimum. Also, when the sun starts to set, occupy your loved one with a fun activity such as playing a board game.
