Flu season is upon us…it’s not too late to get a flu shot

December 28th, 2012 No Comments

Flu season’s peak is January and February. It’s especially important for seniors over 65 to get a flu shot to protect themselves. As we become older, our immune system becomes weaker, making seniors more susceptible to contracting the flu. For older adults, the seasonal flu is a serious matter, as it can become deadly. In fact, 90% of deaths from flu occur in adults over age 65, as well as over 50% of flu-related hospitalizations. Medicare does cover one flu shot per flu season. For those involved in elder care New Jersey, be sure to encourage them getting a flu shot. It’s not too late!

Study shows 4 ways to age healthier…not as hard as you would think!

December 18th, 2012 1 Comment

An interesting new study from England’s University College of London shows 4 simple ways for baby boomers to age in a healthier way. The study followed healthy adults aged 35-55 from 1985 to 1988 and did a follow-up study in 2008-2009, when all participants were over the age of 60. The study showed 4 main healthy habits which stood out in participants:

  • Not participating in smoking
  • Consuming alcohol in moderation
  • Maintaining consistent physical activity (at least 2.5 hours a week of moderate activity or 1 or more hours of intense activity)
  • Daily consumption of fruits and vegetables

How do you fare with these healthy habits? It’s not too late to change with these easy habits! Visit Huff Post to read more http://huff.to/ZKQIJE.

Series on aging stresses importance of talking to your parents about end-of-life wishes before a crisis happens…

December 13th, 2012 No Comments

Visiting Angels - In The NewsNBC News, in conjunction with AARP, has been featuring a series about aging. In one video installment, the focus was on having a conversation with your older parents about their end-of-life wishes–how they would like to handle topics such as how they would like elder care should they need extra help (such as home care NJ), where they would like to live, how they would like their funeral to be arranged, what their plan is to financially pay for long term elder care, who would be appointed power of attorney, where important paperwork is located, etc. These conversations about death and dying are extremely difficult for both adult children as well as adults, but by being proactive BEFORE a crisis arises will greatly reduce stress and anxiety.

New study shows why older people are more trusting…and more open to scams

December 5th, 2012 2 Comments

According to the FTC, 80% of scam victims in the U.S. are over the age of 65. A new study from UCLA and funded by the National Institute on Aging shows why older people may fall prey to scams than do younger people. The study showed photos of faces to two groups. One group was comprised of 119 older people, ages 55-84. The other group had 24 younger people, ages 20-42. They were asked to rank the photos as Trustworthy, Neutral, or Untrustworthy. The photos were judged according to insincere smiles, averted eyes, smirky mouths, etc.

The anterior insula in the brain is what detects untrustworthiness or shiftiness. Interestingly, in the older group, the anterior insula showed little activation when looking at an untrustworthy-looking face, whereas the younger group’s anterior insula became very active. This can help explain why older adults tend to see the positive in people and tend to trust individuals who aren’t trustworthy.

At Visiting Angels NJ, you can rest assured our home care aides can be trusted. We thoroughly screen and have background checks on each aide.
