Make it a fall-free autumn with fall prevention…

Visiting Angels NJ Promotes Fall Prevention Awareness

As we usher in the first days of autumn, it’s time to focus on Fall Prevention Awareness. Did you know 2.3 million injuries from falls were treated in emergency rooms across the country in 2010? Of these, 662,000 were admitted into the hospital. Many times these falls in older people result in hip fractures, lacerations, and traumas to the head. Fortunately, many falls can be prevented through simple measures such as:

  • exercise to help promote balance and stability
  • changing medications which may cause dizziness or sleepiness
  • having regular eye exams to improve vision
  • evaluating home hazards such as throw rugs and other obstacles which may cause one to trip

To lower your risk of bone fracture, eat a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, get plenty of weight bearing exercise, and get screened for osteoporosis.

National Senior Center Month

New Jersey Seniors: September is National Senior Center Month

With 10,000 boomers turning 65 each day, senior centers across the country are serving about a million older adults per day! These centers are a terrific community resource for seniors. They are places where people can remain social and make new friends, learn new skills, gain access to benefits, and can manage their health. Also important—people have FUN at senior centers! Dances, games, meals, exercising, bingo, and traveling are all examples of senior center activities.

This year’s theme is “Celebrate LIFE at Your Senior Center” and highlights how centers equip seniors to make choices that can enrich their lives and encourage them to become experts at celebrating LIFE (Learning, Independence, Friends, and Energy).

In Burlington and Mercer Counties in New Jersey, we are fortunate to have many senior centers:

Senior Long-Term Care Options

Are you an adult child of aging parents who aren’t unable to manage on their own safely? Nursing homes aren’t the only option for their long-term care, especially if your parents don’t have a lot of medical needs. At Visiting Angels, we love to help people stay in their own homes safely with help from our Angels! Studies have shown that’s where people want to be as they grow older, after all. We’re partial to home care, obviously, but there are other long-term care options, as well. Each person and family must decide what’s best in each case. Take a look at our infographic, or read about different types of senior long-term care by clicking on the image.

National Thank You Day

National Thank You Day

“Feeling grateful or appreciative of someone or something in your life actually attracts more of the things that you appreciate and value into your life.” –Northrup Christiane

Who doesn’t like to receive a “Thank You”? That’s easy–we all do! On September 15th especially, take a minute to tell someone “Thank You” for any reason you can think of:

  • “Thank you for smiling at me this morning.”
  • “Thank you for speaking a kind word when I had a bad day.”
  • “Thanks for taking out the garbage.”
  • “Thank you for your help with that project.”

To our Angel employees:

  • “Thank you for your compassion with our clients.”
  • “Thank you for accepting assignments on short notice.”
  • “Thanks for your flexibility.”
  • “Thank you for your positive outlook.”

To our wonderful home care clients:

  • “Thank you for trusting us to assist you.”
  • “Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us.”
  • “Thanks for allowing us to help give your family peace of mind.”
  • “Thank you for just being you!” 🙂

Quick Healthcare Clinics On the Rise in New Jersey Retail Stores

Quick Health Care in retail locations

Quick Healthcare Clinics Multiplying in New Jersey Retail Chains

In our culture, we like things to happen quickly and conveniently, right? It’s no different when it comes to our family’s health care. When we have a cough that just won’t stop, or when our aging parent has a mysterious rash, we don’t want to wait several days in order to see a primary care physician. We also don’t want to spend unnecessary hours in our hospital’s emergency room. The solution–head over to the local pharmacy or grocery store to be checked out by their in-house retail clinic. Walgreens, Shop-Rite, Acme, and CVS are featuring clinics in select stores throughout New Jersey, with more planned. These clinics accept insurance, have either a physician or a nurse-practitioner on staff, and no appointment is needed. See below for a list of typical services.

Stand-alone urgent care facilities which offer higher level emergency services such as fractures, x-rays, injuries, etc. They have a larger staff and have one or more emergency physicians available.

Both types of quick care clinics help to ease the burden on overcrowded emergency rooms and offer convenient hours on weekends and even holidays.
