14 Multi-Generational Holiday Activities

It can be tough around the holidays to find fun activities that both young and old will find enjoyable. Visiting Angels NJ believes holidays are a perfect time to delight in family moments together–regardless of the age of the family members. Below are some great ideas for this season’s gatherings:

  • 1. Every family has their own favorite recipes. Ask Grandma and Aunt Sue to jot down some of their favorites. Then compile the recipes to create your own custom family cookbook. Make copies to give to other members. This will be sure to become a treasured keepsake!
  • 2. Take a few of the recipes from the book and make a delicious meal.
  • 3. Assemble those photos that have been pushed into shoe boxes by putting together a photo album. Not only will the older folks love reminiscing, but it will also give younger family members a chance to learn their family’s history.
  • 4. Jump in the van and marvel at Christmas lights around your neighborhood or even to a former neighborhood.
  • 5. Stay inside and watch old home videos, watch a holiday movie (you can never see “It’s a Wonderful Life” too many times!), or play board games together.
  • 6. For the ladies of the family, plan a spa day or go to a tea room to enjoy high tea.
  • 7. Bring your family over to your older parent or grandparent’s house to have a “deck the halls” party. Set up their Christmas tree, outdoor lights, menorah, etc. Encourage them to talk about some of the decorations, as they probably have fond memories associated with many. When the holidays are over, make sure you have another “party” to take everything down!
  • 8. Invite neighborhood families to come over to sing Christmas carols or other familiar songs. The party will be even more fun if everyone brings a treat to share!
  • 9. Remember dough ornaments? Have some fun with these. Ingredients: 3 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 1 cup water. Mix together ingredients and knead until the dough is smooth. If it’s too dry, add 1 T of water at a time. Get out those holiday cookie cutters and cut out festive shapes. Be sure to poke a hole in the tops for hanging. Bake 300° for 1.5 hours. Let the ornaments cool, then decorate with markers, acrylic paint, sparkles, buttons, fabric, etc.
  • 10. Create a calendar of important dates in your older neighbor or loved one’s life. Find photos and fill in their special dates. They’ll enjoy it all year!
  • 11. Have an “I Remember When” party urging each person to remember and share special events that have been meaningful. Set up a camera or recording device to record these cherished moments. Let people know in advance the plan so they can think about what they’d like to share. .
  • 12. Make a special game of reminiscing: everyone writes some questions to ask of the people in the room about his or her history and put the questions in a jar. Perhaps the grandkids want to know what Grandma did without TV, or parents can ask what their children’s big Christmas wishes are, or maybe Grandma would like to know her son or daughter’s favorite memory from childhood. Take turns removing questions out of the jar. Making a game out of reminiscing will get everyone more involved!
  • 13. Go to a seasonal event, such as a holiday concert, parade, or play.
  • 14. Call Visiting Angels for NJ senior care if you need another pair of hands around the holidays. We provide a wide range of in-home care services by caring aides.
