February 13th, 2016 1 Comment

Valentine’s Day isn’t just for couples in love. It’s a day to show your love and appreciation to all the people in your life. And at Visiting Angels NJ, we especially want to encourage you to convey your affection to seniors! Check out these enjoyable Valentine’s Day activities to do with your older loved ones:

Invite them over for a special afternoon tea…or bring the tea to them
Take them to the mall, out to lunch, or any other place they may be wanting to go
Play a round or two of cards or board games with them
Take them to a senior center that’s offering Valentine’s Day activities such as bingo or dancing
Bring your elderly neighbor a Valentine’s Day card, accompanied by homemade cookies or candy
Ask to look at their photo albums and encourage them to reminisce as they look through with you
If you’re long-distance, give them a call or video chat

Most of all, let them know you’re thinking about them and that you care about them. This will put smiles on their faces…and yours!

Heart Health for Women

Q: At what age should women begin checking their cholesterol?

A: Women should begin checking their cholesterol levels at age 45 and men at age 35. Smokers, diabetics, and those with a family history of heart disease should start at age 20.

Exercise and having a heart-healthy diet contribute to keeping your cholesterol levels in check. the American Heart Association suggests eating a variety of foods from each food group.

Cholesterol-lowering foods to eat:

  • Multi-grain foods (oats, bran)
  • Fish high in fat (salmon, albacore tuna, trout, sardines, mackerel)
  • Fruits and vegetables which have antioxidants (red beans, pinto beans, black bean, blueberries, cranberries, prunes, strawberries, raspberries, plums, apples, pecans, artichoke)
  • Omega-3 rich foods (salmon, trout, fresh tuna, mackerel, halibut, spinach, kale, Brussels sprouts, walnuts)

Limit your intake of these foods:

  • Foods high in saturated fat (beef, lamb, pork, butter, cheese, egg yolk)
  • Processed meats (sausages, hot dogs, cold cuts)
  • Fried foods (French fries, fried chicken, donuts)
  • Foods with simple sugars (candy, cake, baked goods, soft drinks)
  • Shortening and saturated oil (use olive oil or canola oil instead)
