Being a NJ elder care caregiver to a neighbor or family member can be one of the most rewarding jobs you may have…and also one of the most demanding and stressful ones. To make the most out of your time caring for someone, follow these tips:

  • 1. Learn all you can about the illness or condition of your loved one. Knowledge is power.
  • 2. Get support. This could be through a support group or with extra care (such as a home care NJ)
  • 3. Make sure the home is safe for the care recipient. Many simple things can be done to make the home safer, from removing area rugs to installing toilet rails, for example.
  • 4. Find a back-up caregiver. This is for times when you may not be available.
  • 5. Seek other resources such as free programs through your local senior center or Council on Aging.
  • 6. Investigate financial and legal services. The Veterans Program we offer is one example–home care to qualified veterans as no personal cost.
  • 7. Allow help from friends and family. Don’t be a martyr…ask for help when needed. When people offer their help, take them up on the offer.
