October 22 is National Nut Day

October’s famous holidays include Columbus Day and Halloween, but were you aware of its lesser-known “holiday”–National Nut Day? It’s a day to celebrate those healthy, crunchy morsels known as nuts. Did you realize how nutrition-packed nuts are? In fact, according to the FDA, eating about 1.5 ounces of nuts a day (a handful) may help to reduce your risk of heart disease. Nuts such as Brazil nuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, cashews, and peanuts all are considered heart-healthy due to their high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and amino acids.

Other Benefits:

Nuts have also been studied and have been suggested to help lower stress levels, protect against lung and prostate cancer, help with maintaining ones weight, lower bad cholesterol levels, and help prevent cognitive decline.

If you’re a family caregiver of an older loved one, why not add some nuts to your loved one’s diet as a healthy snack? Be aware that although nuts are healthy, they’re also high in calories (especially if they’re covered in chocolate!).
