April 2 is National Walking Day

It may be a rainy spring day here in New Jersey, but it’s still a great day to walk. Regardless where you live, walking is good for you and your older loved ones. By walking just 30 minutes a day, your body and mind will enjoy these health benefits:

  • Lowers risk of having a stroke or heart disease
  • Lowers risk of having osteoporosis
  • Lowers risk of obtaining certain cancers such as breast and colon
  • Increases happiness
  • Increases calorie burning to decrease your body weight
  • When walking with a companion, increases relationship bonds

Where will you walk today with your older parent, relative, neighbor, or friend? Take this opportunity to take them to the mall, grocery shopping, for a stroll in the local park, or around their neighborhood. Not only will you both be becoming healthier, but you’ll also be nurturing your relationship. Since loneliness is an issue for those living alone, a short walk will help boost their spirits in an otherwise lonely day.
