Newcastle University (U.K.) researchers have discovered that the common pain killer ibuprofen may help slow diseases which are age-related—arthritis, dementia, and arthritis, for example. The theory is that the drug decreases inflammation which is seen in certain age-related diseases. The study was performed on mice and found inflammation was leading cells to sleep, rather than generating new cells, which are needed to keep the organs vital. Ibuprofen was shown to stop the cells from sleeping, allowing the new cells to form.

People shouldn’t start taking ibuprofen to stop their bodies from aging, however. It had no effect on mice who were not experiencing inflammation and were aging normally. It does have side effects: may cause stomach ulcers and indigestion, may raise the risk of strokes and heart attacks if taken in high doses long-term, and can reduce fertility in women. Controlling one’s inflammation is a key point in helping to maintain good health. Diet and exercise will help naturally; a diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, omega-3 fatty acids, and lean meats are recommended to lower inflammation.
