Getting older qualifies New Jerseyans for senior discounts

60 is the new 50, and 50 is the new 40…or is it the other way around?  No matter what the new and old numbers mean, if you’re 55 or older, discounts await! You’ll probably be asked your age, and you may even have to prove it, but at least one benefit of growing older is qualifying for senior discounts at various restaurants, entertainment venues, and retail establishments. If you’re willing to confess your age, then you can take advantage of these discounts in Mercer County and Burlington County, New Jersey.

If you’re thinking the only way to get senior discounts is through membership with AARP, think again. Although AARP does offer some great memberships perks, it’s not necessary to get a good deal. Below is a list of places that offer discounts to all seniors, regardless of any membership status.

1. AMC Theatres

If you’re 60 or over, you can save on regular adult-priced ticket any day of the week, starting at noon. Just show a valid ID at the box office. Find AMC Theatres in Hamilton and Marlton.

2. International House of Pancakes (IHOP)

This popular breakfast restaurant offers diners aged 55 and up a special “senior menu” at discounted meal prices. Take advantage of this deal any day of the week. Check out your local IHOP in Mount Holly.

3. Goodwill

Goodwill of New Jersey offers shoppers 55 and up a 15% discount as part of their “Terrific Senior Tuesdays.”  Senior shoppers can take advantage of this discount by completing an application at any Goodwill location to receive their “Terrific Senior Tuesday” membership card on the spot. In our area, you can shop at a Goodwill Store in Trenton, Ewing, Bordentown Township, Willingboro, Lumberton, Maple Shade Township.

4. Kohl’s

Kohl’s operates in over 49 states and offers low prices on clothing for the entire family. This clothing retailer also offers an in-store discount of 15% every Wednesday to customers aged 55 or better. To take advantage of this discount you’ll need to present your identification to verify your age at the register. Shop Kohl’s at the Hamilton Market Place in Trenton. You’ll also find one nearby in Cherry Hill and Voorhees.

5. New Jersey State Parks

New Jersey residents who are age 62 or older are eligible to obtain a New Jersey State Park Senior Citizen Pass, which grants free entrance to the parks and discounted camping rates. State Parks in Mercer/Burlington Counties: Princeton Battlefield in Princeton, Washington Crossing State Park in Titusville, Rancocas State Park in New Lisbon, and Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park in Princeton.

6. Ross Dress for Less

Take advantage of a 10% discount on Tuesdays when shopping at Ross Dress for Less department stores. Just sign up at the customer service counter at your local store by providing an ID card with your age or date of birth. The store will issue you a Tuesday Club Discount card.  Find a Ross store in Lawrenceville, Hamilton Township, Cinnaminson, and Mount Laurel.

To find other senior discounts, ask the retailer you frequent if they offer one, or take a look at their website.

Note: Visiting Angels does not endorse or recommend any retailers, entertainment venue, park, or restaurant. The preceding list is for informational purposes only. Please check with each retailer first to be sure the discount is available. Visiting Angels is not responsible for expired or incorrect information.

New Jersey sun gives off UV rays and heat dangers for seniors

New Jerseyians of all ages love the Jersey Shore! People may think UV rays from the sun aren’t that strong here in the Mid-Atlantic. However, UV and heat dangers are prevalent for all seniors who live in our state. Seniors are more prone to dehydration, eye damage, skin cancer, heat stroke, and heat exhaustion. It’s important for older folks and those who care for them to be aware of these dangers. Our July Community Resource Bulletin goes into more detail of these dangers–but even more importantly–the steps one can take to avoid these dangers.
