3 Summer Heat Care Tips for Diabetics

Seniors with diabetes are at a greater risk of health problems during the hot weather than a non-diabetic. When the temperature soars and humidity climbs, it can become difficult to cope with the summer heat. Summertime dangers can include dehydration, heat exhaustion, and foot problems, especially for those with diabetes. Visiting Angels provides these tips so diabetics can beat the heat and still enjoy these delightful days of summer.

  1. Stay Hydrated

In the heat, type 2 diabetics can lose fluids at a faster rate than is healthy. Keep yourself hydrated with water and sugar-free drinks. Carry a water bottle with you on walks or during exercise. Protect yourself by avoiding alcohol and caffeine during the heat of the day. Always have a snack with you in the event your blood sugar drops.

  1. Avoid Heat Exhaustion

During heat waves, stay cool indoors with air conditioning or a fan. Take a cool shower before bedtime or whenever you feel overly warm. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include

  • Dizziness
  • Fainting or near fainting
  • Muscle cramps
  • Sweating excessively
  • Clammy skin
  • Headaches
  • Rapid heartbeat

To avoid heat exhaustion, exercise or schedule more strenuous projects before 10 AM and after 4 PM so that you work during the cooler hours of the day and out of the worst of the sun. Protect yourself from sunburn with sunscreen, clothing, a hat, and sunglasses. Check your blood sugar levels throughout the day, and protect your diabetic supplies by keeping those cool as well.

  1. Maintain Good Foot Care

Always keep your feet protected when outdoors. Use sunscreen on your feet when wearing sandals or shoes that cover your whole foot. Change your socks whenever they become damp from perspiration. Never go barefoot on hot surfaces, and check your feet each day for sores. For the diabetic, protecting your feet must be a way of life.
