How important is socialization as we age?

It’s a sad fact that as we age, we begin to lose our social contacts. There are many reason for this. We lose our ability to drive, giving us less access to friends, activities, and relatives. Our spouse may become ill and we need to stay home to care for them. And our friends and relatives slowly start to pass away. These factors can cause isolation and depression as we age.
