In Movie News: More films are featuring older characters…

People over 50 are a strong economic force for the movie industry, with approximately 7.2 million monthly potential movie-goers. Often, this demographic has been overlooked. But with recent films featuring older characters, this trend may be changing. This past weekend, Amour won Best Foreign Film at the Golden Globes, and is also nominated for an Academy Award for best picture, best actress, and best director. It features an older couple living in France, who face end-of-life and elder care challenges.

Other recent movies featuring over-50 actors include The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel starring Judi Dench and others retiring in India, Trouble With The Curve starring Clint Eastwood as an aging widower losing his eyesight, The Guilt Trip starring Barbra Streisand in this comedy with Seth Rogan, Parental Guidance starring Billy Crystal and Bette Midler as grandparents, Hope Springs starring Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep as a middle-aged couple, and coming soon, Quartet starring Maggie Smith about retired opera singers living in a retirement community.

As baby boomers age, hopefully the market will demand more films–of all genres–featuring older characters.
