Who doesn’t love to eat ice cream in the summer? But can it be good for you?

7 Delicious Alternatives to Traditional Ice Cream

Did you know July was declared National Ice Cream Month in 1984 by presidential proclamation? Ice Cream Day is celebrated the third Sunday of July. Every generation loves this treat that both young and old can share together. Accompanying your older parent or loved one to the ice cream parlor is an activity you’ll both enjoy. We all have fond memories of the ice cream truck roaming through our neighborhoods with its catchy jingle, beckoning our icy purchases. Ice cream is one of America’s most favorite summer treats, but can it be good for you?

A 71-year-old Florida woman’s doctor was astonished at how healthy his patient’s bones were. “It’s amazing your bones don’t show any signs of osteoporosis. What’s in your diet?” he asked. Her reply: “I eat ice cream every day.” While eating ice cream daily isn’t recommended due to the high fat and sugar content, it does contain valuable nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus, potassium, and B vitamins.

In recent years, manufacturers have worked on producing delicious alternatives to high-fat, high sugar traditional ice cream.

7 Ice Cream Alternatives:

  • “Light” Ice Cream: Light ice cream has to contain half the fat or 1/3 less calories than regular ice cream
  • “Low Fat” Ice Cream: Contains 3 grams or less of fat per serving
  • “Slow Churned” Ice Cream: 1/2 the fat and 1/3 the sugar of regular ice cream; has the smooth, thick texture of real ice cream
  • Frozen Yogurt: Made from nonfat milk, milk solids, yogurt culture and sweetener; less fat but not always fewer calories than regular ice cream
  • Sorbet: Made from water flavored with fruit juice, plus sweetener
  • Sherbet: Made primarily of fruit juice, sugar, and water. Also contains milk, egg white, or gelatin
  • Fruit Bars: Made with fruit, water or juice, and sweetener

As with all good things, moderation is the key. Know your health risks (heart disease, diabetes, overweight) and enjoy frozen treats responsibly!
