Spring Cleaning Tips for Seniors’ Homes

When the air starts turning warmer, the sun starts shining longer, and the flowers start to bloom, it’s a sure sign that spring is on its way. Spring tends to awaken our desire for a cleaner home, a less cluttered home, a fresh smelling home. These tips can help get you started.

1. Tackle germs on surfaces:

To stop germs from spreading, wipe down surfaces such as doorknobs, phones, TV remotes, kitchen counter tops, appliance handles, faucets, toilet flush levers, light switches, and anywhere else people frequently touch.

2. Strip out the smells:

To make the home smell fresh…

  • Open the windows on a sunny day
  • Change bed linens
  • Wash dirty laundry; if you’re really feeling ambitious, pull out clothes you haven’t worn in awhile from the closet and give those a wash, too
  • Set out natural air fresheners such as fabric soaked in lemon, orange, peppermint, or vanilla extract
  • Wipe down surfaces with a great smelling cleanser to help make the house smell clean and fresh

3. Clear clutter:

It’s hard to let go of things, but spring may provide motivation to at least start clearing away clutter. Having all that clutter may be causing unwanted stress and a feeling of being weighed down.

  • Begin with one room and assign small goals for each room
  • Tackle the most obvious items which are out of place or not needed. Your kitchen gadget drawer is an example; take everything out and only keep what you will use on a consistent basis. Your closet is another easy place to begin. If you haven’t worn something in years, or if it doesn’t fit or is out of style, it’s time to say good-bye.
  • Enlist someone to help if the task is too overwhelming or if you need encouragement
  • Give yourself rewards after reaching each small goal
  • Keep telling yourself it’s worth it to be clutter-free!
