11 Skin Care Tips for Seniors

As we age, our skin takes a beating. Sun exposure is a big contributor to unwanted wrinkles, age spots, and dryness. Skin also becomes much more thin and loses fat as we age, and veins tend to show themselves more prominently. Additionally, older skin takes longer to heal and bruises more easily than when we were younger.

To keep our skin in good condition, these elder care tips may help:

  • Don’t shower or bathe daily–this can dry the skin
  • Do use moisturizing lotions or creams daily
  • Do protect skin from injuries that could tear the skin
  • Do protect your skin when in the sun with sunscreen, clothing, hats, sunglasses, etc.
  • Do be aware that some diseases, such as diabetes, require special skin care needs
  • Don’t use strong antibacterial soaps–these can dry aging skin
  • Do drink plenty of liquids to stay hydrated
  • Do add a humidifier when the air is too dry
  • Don’t smoke
  • Do check your skin often for any changes
  • Do avoid stress which can cause dry skin
