World Kidney Day: 6 Ways to Be Kind to Your Kidneys

March 12th, 2015 No Comments

World Kidney Day

The second Thursday in March is World Kidney Day. It’s a day to bring awareness to Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and how to prevent it. People who have a family history of the disease or who have diabetes and/or high blood pressure may have a greater risk of getting CKD.

6 kidney-kind ways to help prevent Chronic Kidney Disease:

  • 1. Don’t eat processed foods; they’re typically full of sodium and phosphorus which damage kidneys. Examples of processed foods are boxed meals, lunch meats, crackers, chips, etc.
  • 2. Cut back on red meat; high animal protein and saturated fat may be harmful to kidneys
  • 3. Cut the colas and other sodas; they’re high in calories and may contain kidney-harming phosphorus additives
  • 4. Lower sodium intake
  • 5. Limit NSAID use such as ibuprofen (Advil), acetaminophen (Tylenol), and naproxen (Aleve) as they constrict blood vessels; drink a large glass of water when you do take one of them
  • 6. Eat kidney-loving foods: red bell peppers, cabbage, cauliflower, apples, cranberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, red grapes, fish
